Kentucky Christmas Traditions : Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop

This weekend, I found an absolutely enchanting Christmas experience located in the heart of Lexington that I just have to share with you–Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop.  I was invited to a gathering there this weekend and immediately fell in love.

Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop is located in the Landsdowne Shopping Center off Tates Creek Road. From the outside, it’s a fairly unassuming building.  I’ve driven past it a million times and never thought anything about it.  The first hint of anything unusual, however, are the beautifully decorated doors leading into the shop (you’ll see those in my outfit post coming next week).

Once you enter the shop, you’re assailed with the scents of Christmas, as you would expect from a Christmas tree shop.  But the sensory experience sets the stage for an absolutely magical experience. I felt like I had entered another world or taken a step back in time.  Evergreen is everywhere.  The shop not only sells Christmas trees, but related decorations like garlands, wreaths, and floral arrangements.  Everything is cozy and inviting.

The shop is great to visit with friends or family.  Let’s be honest–my friends and I were just as excited about it as Kane was!  Chloe from Chloe Milan and Ella from Girl Meets Lex attended, so we had fun exploring together. You can check out Ella’s post here. We also met The Kentucky Gent and several other bloggers. So fun! Oh, and like my outfit?  Come back Monday for a full outfit post and all the details.

One of the centerpieces of the shop is an authentic sleigh from the late 1800s that came from the originll Christmas tree farm, passed down through the years in the Hillenmeyer family.  Santa sets in it to take pictures, and it is absolutely a beautiful historic piece. Ella and Santa had a heart-to-heart chat:)

To the left of the entrance is an actual fireplace where you can roast marshmallows!!!  They have everything you need, including the iron sticks, marshmallows, and baby wipes, because getting those babies off can be messy.  How cool is that? It’s also a nice little place to get warm.

If you have kids, you must, simply must, take them to visit Santa at Hillenmeyer! Santa is one fun dude!!!  Kane wouldn’t set on his lap, so he wandered around Kane and Chauncey, allowing us to get some fun, whimsical shots that you just won’t get anywhere else.  I can’t reiterate this enough–it’s an experience.  If you allow your imagination to roam just a little, then you can just picture this as being a little place at the North Pole.
One of Kane’s favorite parts was the live nativity scene! There’s Joseph, Mary, and Baby Jesus surrounded by donkeys and sheep.  The signs surrounding the nativity are date back quite a few decades (I believe that they’ve been restored).

The Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop is owned by Joseph and Shannon Hillenmeyer.  While the Hillenmeyer family has been in the Christmas tree business for a very, very long time, Joseph and Shannon wanted to do something a little bit different.  They wanted to take this space and create an experience that encompassed the spirit of Christmas past, which many urban dwellers don’t get to experience.  I’ll be the first to tell you that they’ve nailed it!  I’m so excited to have discovered the Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop and I can tell you with certainty that this is the first of many visits for us!  It is a wonderful Kentucky Christmas tradition!!!

Hillenmeyer Christmas Shop is located in the Lansdowne Center at 3391 Tates Creek Road, Lexington, Kentucky.  Their hours are Monday through Saturday from 10 am to 8 am, and Sunday, 11 am to 8 pm. I hear Santa stays busy with Christmas preparations throughout the week, so he’s only there on the weekends. Remember, it’s totally free to visit, and be sure to take your camera to snaps photos. We actually took all of our Christmas pics here, and the family photo above will be on our Christmas cards this year!!! And pick up something to take home with you–my little swag that Kane is holding in these pics smells just like a Christmas dream.

Before you go, don’t forget to check out the Kentucky Shop Local Gift Guide and GIVEAWAY, which you can find here!

A special thank you to the Hillenmeyers for inviting us out for this delightful experience!!!

Nice to meet you!
