Tips for keeping your hair healthy this summer

Summer heat can really put stress on your hair.  So when summertime rolls around, I make sure to give my hair some TLC to keep it healthy despite the summer heat.  My hair is long and color-treated, which I feel makes it even more susceptible to damage in the summer. Luckily, I’ve found that by following some simple steps, I can help protect my hair in the summertime and help repair damage.  Here are my tips for keeping your hair healthy this summer.

Tip #1 for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer: Wash Your Hair Immediately After Swimming

If you get your hair wet while swimming in the pool, make sure to wash your hair immediately.  If you’re somewhere you can’t wash it immediately, at least rinse it out in the sink.  Chlorine  is super drying and can make hair brittle. It can also cause highlights to change colors. I try to avoid dunking my head under water, and keep my hair in a high bun while I’m in the pool.

Tip #2 for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer: Lay Off the Heat  Tools

Of course, using heat tools can damage your hair.  Instead of blowdrying your hair every time you wash it, try to air dry it sometimes instead.  Also, when you do use heat tools, use ones that allow you to adjust the heat settings, and try to style your hair on a lower heat setting.

Tip #3 for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer: Go Longer Between Washings

Try to extend the time between hair washings by using a dry shampoo. Excess washings, like washing your hair every day, can dry out your hair, because your natural oils will be stripped.

Tip #4 for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer: Use a Shampoo + Condition That Helps Repair Your Hair

To keep your hair from getting too dry and brittle, use both a shampoo and conditioner that’s for repairing your hair.  I’ve been using Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Shampoo and Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Conditioner.  The Ultimate Repair line has 3x the amount of liquid keratin for extra strength repair.

Tip #5 for Keeping Your Hair Healthy This Summer: Use a Hair Mask Every Few Hair Washings

To give my hair some extra TLC, I like to add a hair mask to my hair washing routine every 3 washings.  I just used the Schwarzkopf Gliss™ Ultimate Repair Anti-Damage Mask this weekend and could tell a difference in my hair.  You can leave it on for 1-2 minutes, or if you really feel your hair has been through the ringer, then leave it on for longer.

The Gliss Ultimate Repair line benefits are cumulative as a regimen, so you should use all three products together to achieve the greatest benefits for your hair. Gliss Hair Repair products are new to the US market, and focus on repairing your hair. The Gliss lines deliver proven, measurable results.  In addition to the Ultimate Repair line, Gliss also has lines for Ultimate Moisture, Oil Nutritive, Extra Volume, and Color Guard.

I love your hair color, it’s beautiful! I love your tips! I always try to use less heat styling tools over the summer, it’s usually a crazy wavy look lol.

I’ve never heard of this line! And your tips are great – I’m a huge proponent of going at least 4 days in between washing my hair because a.) it’s good for your hair, and b.) ain’t nobody have time for a blow dryer ha!
