A Letter to My Son on His First Day of Kindergarten

Kane,

Today is the BIG day—you start Kindergarten! We can’t believe it’s finally here. You’ll get dressed in your new polo shirt you picked out, put on your Spider-Man backpack, and maybe hold our hands as you walk through the doors of your new school.

We have thought about this moment since you were just a baby like your sister Karoline. At the time, it seemed so far away, but we knew the years would pass quickly. And we were right. You’ve quickly grown into a big boy with an even bigger personality.

Starting school is going to be a new adventure. You’ll learn so many cool things and make new friends. You’ll get to play on the computers and go on field trips. There’s so much you’ll get to do!

Just remember these things and you’ll be fine:

One of the things we admire most about you is your kind heart. Treat others with kindness and be a good friend. No one likes a bully.

If you don’t know how to do something, ask for help. You can do anything you set your mind to. The only limits you have are the ones you set yourself.

Don’t be afraid to try new things. You might not like all of them, but you’ll never know unless you try.

Listen to your teachers. They’re there to help you learn and what they have to say is important.

Always try your best at everything you do. You’re so smart and you’ll do awesome. You can go anywhere and do anything you want to do—just set your mind to it and work hard.

We know you’re nervous. It’s a new year at a new school with new teachers. But just remember these things and you’ll be fine. We love you so much and can’t wait to hear all about your day this evening!

With lots of love,

Mom and Dad
