Straw hats are one of the biggest trends from summer. They’re everywhere this year. That said, I had put off purchasing one because I just wasn’t for sure I could wear the trend. Yes, even fashion bloggers can be insecure about rocking trends sometimes. But Target had a big sale on their hats last week (20% off + an extra 10% off with Cartwheel), so I took the plunge and bought two!
Sometimes you just have to step out of your comfort-zone. I ended up loving both hats, including this straw fedora one, once I got them home and played around with them.
My advice is to look for a “Goldilocks” hat–where the circumference of the hat is just right. If you get one where it’s too big, then the hat will fall in your eyes, and if you get one where it’s too small, the hat will perch awkwardly on top of your head. Also, play around with how you place the hat on your head. I find it to be much more flattering when you tilt a hat at a slight angle and down towards your face rather than just plopping it straight on your head. Finally, don’t be afraid to bend and re-shape the brim, just be gentle when yoy do.
There’s several styles of straw hats that are popular right now–fedoras, like the one I have on; floppy hats with wide-brims, and Panama hats (this was the other hat I purchared). I think that a floppy, wide-brimmed hat, however, is an easy way to get in on the trend.
You can rock the straw hat trend with just about any casual or even date night look. Here, I’ve paired it with a fun, simple outfit in bright colors. Did you notice my shorts pick up the color of the detail on the brim? That detail was what drew me to this particular straw hat in the first place. My shirt, shorts, and earrings are all new arrivals at J. Crew Factory, and they’re all very affordable. When it comes to shoes, I like to match my shoes to my hat, so I wore my favorite neutral wedges.
Have you tried out the straw hat trend yet? If so, what did you find works best for you???
